Buy X get Y: quantity or cart-amount condition, free or discounted reward
Gift with purchase, buy 2 get 1, spend $100 get a tote. Auto-add versus one-click.
Buy X get Y rewards the customer with a product once a condition is met. The condition is a quantity of the products under Applies to (buy 2 mugs) or an amount spent on them (spend €100 on anything, or on a collection).
Creating one
- Offers › Create offer › Buy X get Y.
- Applies to: the products that count toward the condition. “Entire store” gives a store-wide threshold.
- Condition: Buy a quantity (N units) or Spend an amount (store currency, before discounts).
- Reward: the product Y, how many units, and the discount on it: a percentage (100% = free) or an amount off each unit.
- “Add Y to cart automatically”: on = the reward is added when the condition is met; off = the cart bar shows a one-click button.
- Publish.
How it is applied
- Quantity condition: sets = floor(units of X ÷ N); the reward discount applies to at most sets × Y units of the reward product in the cart. When X and Y are the same product (“buy 2, get 1 free”), each set needs N + Y units.
- Amount condition: the reward is granted once per order when the qualifying items (excluding the reward itself) reach the amount in the presentment currency.
- The reward must be in the cart: auto-add or the cart bar button puts it there; the discount is what makes it free.
- If the condition stops being met (customer removes X), the reward returns to full price automatically.
Cart bar
Before the condition is met the bar shows progress: “Spend €32 more to get Tote free”. Once met and the reward is not in the cart: “Your free Tote is waiting” with an Add button. With auto-add on, the reward is added silently.
Common problems
The reward is added but not discounted.
The reward line is counted, but the condition is not met yet (for example the customer removed a unit of X), or a higher-priority offer already prices the reward product. Check the Offers list order.
Customers get two free gifts.
With the quantity condition, 4 units of X grant 2 rewards if 2 rewards are in the cart. Set the reward quantity to 1 and, if you want a hard cap, use the amount condition, which grants once per order.
The gift shows as a normal product in the cart before anything is bought.
Auto-add only triggers from the product widget and cart bar. A customer who adds the reward manually simply pays full price until the condition is met.
